GA Robotics Students Recognized at VEX Competition

The Upper School VEX Robotics Team wins Skills Award and more at Norristown Nothing But Net VEX Qualifier. Students teams will be moving onto the next round in  2016 Pennsylvania State Championship - East - HS and Western PA VEX State Championship.

Diane Goldstein, upper school physics and engineering teacher introduced robotics and rocketry courses into the GA curriculum.  She reports "If you look at the attached link - you will see we won our first seven matches - which put us as the number one seed going into the finals rounds. We made it through to the semi-finals out of 25 teams!  Justin Wong and Gavin Rees were the robotics drivers and programmers today helping GA to secure a bid for the State Championships.

Robot C Coding Language Powers Vex Competion Robot

Students in the US Vex Robotics program have been busy designing and testing their prototype for this years Vex competitions.  Their robot collects and throws balls, powered by Robot C a specialized coding language for robotics applications. Diane Goldstein, US Engineering and physics teacher has been working with Matt Frank in the Technology Department, along with faculty Bill Kingsbury  and Mike Rheam to develop the Vex student team. Engineering Students Prototype for VEX Robotics Competition

Most periods of the day, you will find GAs engineering and robotics team hunkered down in the maker space, tweaking designs and prototyping for this year's Vex Competition.  Faculty from different areas of the school with specialties in fields related to robotics work help students with their projects from design to coding, from building skills to test sessions.

VEX Robotics in the Upper School

On March 13, Germantown Academy’s Robotics Team competed in the first-ever Philadelphia 76ers Robotics Night at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. The Sixers partnered with the Robotics Education & Competition Foundation to host the official R.E.C. Foundation exhibition match for VRC and VEX IQ robotics on the court prior to their game against the Sacramento Kings, and to raise S.T.E.M. (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) awareness.

Overall, GA’s team, including Nichelle Hall '15, Patrick Ledwith '15, Abay Tadesse '15, Trent Weiss '15, and Justin Wong '15, made it to the semifinals of the tournament. Maitreya Venkataswamy '16 was GA's key programmer. Upper School science teacher Diane Goldstein and Arts Center Production Manager and Technical Director Bill Kingsbury were GA’s faculty advisors. Upper School science teacher Mike Rheam led the team at two previous competitions.

GA’s team built a robot to meet certain tasks. They also programmed the robot to run an autonomous section. As a team, they learned how to communicate, work together, and to meet deadlines.  Read more about the event here.
