Webquests in Middle School History

  • Utilizing interactive online resources middle school history teacher David Baroody has developed multi-modal history lessons that help student understand the connections between history, art and the evolution of culture. In addition to traditional lecture and discussion approaches to learning history, students were asked to embark on a web-quest at the UNESCO World Heritage Organization site that led them to a 3D interactive tour of the Caves of Lascaux (a complex of caves in the south of France). Viewing art works in the caves students considered among many questions, the following: How did prehistoric artists adapt to the different environments within the cave to create their art and how does the art work reveal evidence of an advanced culture? After completing the tour and web-quest students synthesized the information they learned in a 90 second video journal made on a tool of their choosing - smart phone, web cam, digital camera. Baroody urged students, "If you're like me, you will want to write out your answers first so that you are quick, efficient, and know what you want to say BEFORE you hit record. Good luck. Be diligent, and be brilliant!" Click here to see a video of David Baroody presenting this project at the 2013 Future of Education conference in Florence, Italy.
